Nyanga: Nyanga was historically for the Mutasa and Katerere clans, with the Saunyama chieftainship gifted through marriage to a daughter of the Mutasa clan, Senator Chief Mutasa has said.
These remarks were made during the installation of Headman Sakarombe of the Mutasa clan at Nyamhuka Primary School.
According to Senator Chief Mutasa, the area covering parts of Ward 22, 31 and the National Parks had been left without traditional leadership since the 1890s, when colonial settlers displaced the Mutasa people under Sakarombe.
He added that the remains of Sakarombe were initially buried at Rukotso and were later reburied by his children at Claremont.
Another headman still to be installed is Headman Nyangani, who was described as a child with spiritual powers. Senator Chief Mutasa said the vast Nyangani mountain range was named after him.
He said Nyangani resided at what is now known as World’s View, which served as a shrine for Nyangani and the Mutasa people before their displacement.
Senator Chief Mutasa stated that the whole area belongs to the Mutasa clan and that the installation of Headman Nyangani should come after that of Headman Saruchera.
